As a veterinarian, Ellen is fascinated by the relationship between humans and animals, specifically how this relationship affects the well-being of both. Various factors influence this dynamic, including religion, culture, prosperity, and regulations. How can we sustainably improve this relationship?
During her PhD, Ellen conducted research on animal euthanasia and the role of the veterinarian. Through qualitative research, she provided insights into how veterinarians navigate end-of-life decisions. Upon completing her PhD, Ellen received a starter grant, allowing her to continue exploring the theme of animal care and end-of-life decision-making. This theme is not only relevant within the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine but also raises significant social and political questions. As a result, Ellen also conducts various research projects commissioned by governments and NGOs.
In addition to her research, Ellen is actively involved in educating future veterinarians. She has developed a course specifically focused on euthanasia-related issues in veterinary practice. This course aims to prepare students as thoroughly as possible for this important aspect of their future profession.
