Research Project: Netherlands/Indies Early Cinema Cultures, 1895-1920

My research will focus on the production, dissemination and reception of early cinema in the Dutch East Indies (present-day Indonesia) in the late nineteenth century and early part of the twentieth century. It will sketch out practices of early cinema display within a comparative frame – between the home country and the colonies – and will employ an intermedial perspective, studying early cinema as an emerging medium within a broader field of popular image production. Looking at the case of the Netherlands and her colonies – less of a producer of such images but more of a recipient and distributor of ones produced outside their borders – will provide a productive case for studying the formation of a globalized mass media culture in this period.

The research will address some of the following questions: What films were being screened in the Dutch East Indies in this period? What were the trade routes of early cinema to the colonies? What was the commercial logic behind film distribution in the East Indies? Who did exhibitors view as their potential audience/s: Dutch/Europeans, native Indonesians, Chinese, Japanese, others? Where do categories of race, gender and class come into play in the screening situation? As relations between the different groups in the East Indies become increasingly strained in the lead up to the First World War, are such tensions reflected in early cinema viewing experiences?v

The Nation and Its Other: The Emergence of Modern Popular Imagery and Representations 01.04.2010 to 31.08.2014
General project description

This project will analyse the emerging mass-medial production and dissemination of popular imagery and representations in the late 19th and early 20th century, looking specifically at cinematographic images of the Nation and its Other. Two case studies will investigate, on the one hand, trans-nationally circulating popular images of the Netherlands of Dutch and foreign origins, and on the other hand representations of the Asian Other circulating in the Netherlands, in particular in the light of the Boxer Rebellion and the Russo-Japanese War, and with regard to the countries’ colonies in Asia. The goal of the project is to contribute to our understanding of the emergence of a modern globalized mediasphere, and the cultural dynamics modern visual media have engendered, by looking at the formative phase of modern popular mass-media imagery.
