Since 1993 I have been working at the Freudenthal Institute, mainly as a designer of mathematics education for secondary education. From 2001-2010 I have also been active in development cooperation: with teacher training (Philippines, Ghana, Yemen) and with primary school teachers in Indonesia.
I am particularly interested in stimulating 'mathematical thinking skills' in pupils, for example through large open assignments such as the Maths A-lympiad, the Mathematics B-day and the Mathematics Day for Lower Secondary.
Since 2001 I have been working as a teacher educator in mathematics, in addition to my work at the Freudenthal Institute: from 2001-2003 in Cebu, Philippines; from 2003-2012 at the Hogeschool Utrecht and since 2013 at the NHL Hogeschool in Leeuwarden and Groningen.
In 2020 I received a doctoral grant for teachers from the Netherlands Research Organisation (NWO) for my research: “Developing subject content knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge in mathematics teacher training programmes through Learning Study”. In January 2021 I started this PhD-research, for two days a week. In this researchproject we investigate how students of mathematics teacher training programmes can be prepared better for their teaching practice by using the promising approach of Learning Study.
