Profile

Prof. Christopher (Chris) Spiers is Professor of Earth Materials - and Head of the High Pressure and Temperature Laboratory - in the Department of Earth Sciences at the Faculty of Geosciences at Utrecht University. He specialises in research on the mechanical and transport properties of rock materials under conditions that characterise the Earth’s crust and upper mantle, and the effects that fluid-rock interactions have on these properties. 

Prof. Spiers was born and educated in the U.K. graduating with his BSc and PhD from Imperial College, London.  He worked as a Miller Fellow for a number of years thereafter at the University of California at Berkeley, before moving to The Netherlands and to Utrecht University, where he established the HPT Laboratory.

His research interests include topics ranging from the solid state flow and mechanical damage behaviour of crustal and upper mantle rocks (from rocksalt and carbonates to olivine),  to the frictional and healing behaviour of faults, natural and induced earthquake nucleation, the compaction behaviour of sands and sandstones, and to the effects of CO2 on the mechanical behaviour of reservoir rocks, caprocks, coals and gas shales - in the context of both geological storage of CO2 and enhanced hydrocarbons production methods.

Prof Spiers' greatest interest lies in the study of the microphysical and fluid-rock interaction processes that control rock mechanical behaviour, and in constructing and validating microphysical models for such processes.  He is also passionatley committed to educating students and early career researchers, playing a vigorous role in the Earth Sciences Bachelor and Master programmes at Utrecht.  

Having filled university management functions from Dean to Education Director, Prof. Spiers is currently leader of Utrecht University’s  Strategic Research Programme on GeoResources (Transitional Energy and Resources), and Programme Council member in the Dutch National Carbon Capture, Utilization & Storage Programme.

Deep decarbonization of the energy system: Towards Industry with Negative Emissions

General project description 

This hub addresses one of the big open question within Deep Decarbonization of the Energy System, namely the decarbonization of Industry. The energy transition is well underway and gathering pace as far as electric renewables and electrification are concerned. However, it is still unclear how industry will deal with the carbon it needs for fuel and feedstock, when total CO2 (and other GHG) emissions must be brought down to zero around mid-century to meet the Paris target. It will even be necessary for Industry to deliver negative emissions, to offset unavoidable emissions in other sectors. How to achieve this transformation in the decades to come is the challenge that this Hub takes on.


It does so on the understanding that technical options abound, but are in aggregate insufficient or unattractive, warranting the study of new options. Within the hub programme we focus on two promising options: biofuels options with negative emissions, and the use of the subsurface to achieve negative emissions.  


Against the backdrop of this evolving landscape of existing and new technical options, society has to create the conditions under which the required investment decisions can be made now. This involves creating new infrastructure, regulatory frameworks and governance structures that reduce the long-term non-technical risk that now prevents industry to invest. 


This hub brings together a broad group of researchers with an equally broad group from industry, government and civil society. We aim to develop a shared understanding and a shared narrative of how to deliver this the energy transition in industry. The focus will be on the Netherlands. This regional specificity is crucial to answer the central question of industry transformation. But as one small, open and industrialized economy, the results will have relevance for industry transitions
