Brita works as an assistant professor, focussing on marketing and innovation, at the Utrecht University School of Economics (U.S.E.). Prior to her position at U.S.E., Brita worked in Germany as a research associate at the Institute for Learning and Innovation in Networks at Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences and was an external PhD candidate at the Innovation Studies Group within the Copernicus Institute at Utrecht University.

She studied communications, politics and sociology at the University of Münster and the University of Leicester and worked for ten years in corporate communications and marketing at different institutions, such as the start-up of a private, international university, a port authority and a communications agency, before returning to higher education to work as a lecturer and a research associate at different universities of applied sciences in Germany.

Brita's current research mainly focuses on the use of crowdsourcing to facilitate the innovation process during idea generation, development, discussion and evaluation. She is not only interested in the involvement of users, customers or employees during the ideation phase for new commercial products, but also in the use of "citizensourcing" to facilitate public service innovation or open governance projects.

General project description 

Urban environments are accelerating their transformation towards cleaner, friendlier places able to respect and use resources more efficiently. Across Europe, cities are blending social innovation, engineering and ICT excellence and smart technologies to help reach these goals. IRIS is at the forefront of this change and announce itself as the newest addition to the European Commission Smart Cities and Communities (SCC) lighthouse projects. The project has been developed around three lighthouse cities - Utrecht (The Netherlands, coordinator), Nice (France), and Gothenburg (Sweden) - who will work as collaborators and test-beds for follower cities Vaasa (Finland), Alexandroupolis (Greece), Santa Cruz de Tenerife (Spain) and Focsani (Romania). Each city will draw upon a mix of universities and research organisations, local authorities, innovation agencies and private expertise to accelerate entire communities to adopt ambitious energy, mobility and ICT initiatives.
