Het doel van het onderzoek van Van Blaaderen en zijn groep is de ontwikkeling en vervolgens het gebruik van colloïdale modelsystemen voor het verrichten van fundamenteel natuurkundig onderzoek op het gebied van de gecondenseerde materie en tevens het gebruik middels zelfassemblage van deze systemen voor het maken, bestuderen en ontwerpen van geavanceerde materialen.

In de afgelopen jaren is de focus geweest op faseovergangen (vloeistof-gas, bevriezen, smelten) en de glasovergang. Hiertoe werden methoden ontwikkeld om geconcentreerde colloïdale systemen op kwantitatieve wijze in de reële ruimte te onderzoeken middels confocale microscopie en te manipuleren met externe velden (zoals gestructureerde oppervlakken, licht, zwaartekracht en elektrische velden).

De fundamentele kennis verkregen over zelfassemblage wordt gebruikt om nieuwe materialen met speciale (meestal optische) eigenschappen te ontwikkelen. Voorbeelden zijn: fotonische kristallen en elektro-rheologische vloeistoffen. Veel van het experimentele onderzoek wordt in nauwe samenwerking met en geleid door theorie en computersimulaties.

Switchable Optics with Responsive Colloids

General project description 

In electronic-paper displays, the colour of a pixel can be influenced by electrophoretically moving coloured particles in and out of the field of an observer. Apart from colour, also other (optical) properties can be influenced by moving the appropriate particles around with an external field, thereby manipulating their local concentration in a medium. One of the properties that can be tuned that way is the local refractive index, and that in turn can be used to create switchable optical effects.


We aim to uncover the potential of this phenomenon by actively manipulating the refractive index of a system with responsive colloids, aimed at switchable optical components such as lenses and gratings. Such electro-optical components can be used to enhance the functionality of LED light sources in solid state lighting applications.
