Position: Director NILOS

Alex Oude Elferink has been working with NILOS since 1997, where he also worked between 1990 and 1994. Since 1 February 2014 he is the director of NILOS and since 1 September 2015 he is professor International law of the sea. His expertise is in the field of public international law, with a focus on the law of the sea. He is both involved in academic legal research and consultancy work and the teaching of the law of the sea. In the last couple of years he among others has been involved with the following subjects:

  • Delimitation of maritime boundaries between states, among others in the framework of several cases before the International Court of Justice and an arbitral tribunal
  • Establishment of the outer limit of the continental shelf by coastal states
  • Regime of the oceans in the Arctic and Antarctic
  • Regime of the high seas and the international seabed area
  • Litigation and dispute settlement and the law of the sea
