Woodcuts as Reading Aids: Illustrations and Knowledge Transfer in Printed Books in Dutch on the Natural World, c. 1480 - c. 1550 01.10.2016 to 21.10.2022
General project description

My PhD project studies the functions of woodcuts as means of visual communication that guide readers’ interpretation and thus shape processes of knowledge transmission. It focuses on the earliest medical-astrological books in Dutch printed with illustrations, from the first decades of the 16th century. I analyse how vernacular medical-astrological knowledge was presented visually, as well as how early modern readers responded to it and how they used these books in practice.
