CLARIN, one of the pan-European research infrastructures (RIs) in the domain of the social sciences and humanities (SSH), is looking for a Head of Operations who will work closely with the CLARIN Board of Directors and the staff at CLARIN Office.

CLARIN is organised as a distributed network of currently 60 centers in 24 countries (in Europe and beyond), with a federated service offer, and with a central coordination office in Utrecht. CLARIN's primary focus is on services for language resources and is listed as Landmark on the ESFRI roadmap. It is actively pursuing collaboration with other European and international RIs. The main tasks for which the Head of Operations will be responsible are overseeing the implementation of strategic decisions taken by the Board of Directors in close coordination with the Executive Director and coordinating the central CLARIN Office workflows and their alignment with the CLARIN network and the wider infrastructural ecosystem.
The Head of Operations will be based at the CLARIN Office in Utrecht (NL). Some travelling throughout Europe will also be part of the working pattern.

Detailed overview of Responsibilities:
As Head of Operations, you will:

  • manage the central CLARIN Office team and coordinate the execution of the CLARIN Office work plan;
  • oversee the distribution of tasks and daily operations;
  • manage the HR processes, including annual review, staff development, etc;
  • coordinate the CLARIN Office's involvement in European projects.

Broader responsibilities are:

  • facilitating and supporting the operation of CLARIN's governance bodies;
  • overseeing the organisation of the annual conference;
  • managing CLARIN ERIC's involvement in European projects and funding applications;
  • representing CLARIN in relevant international networks;
  • preparing reports of CLARIN's activities and achievements, e.g., for the General Assembly;
  • monitoring the compliance of CLARIN's services with the relevant ethical, legal and societal values;
  • working closely with the Executive Director and Technical Director in key areas, such as: planning the next stages of the development of the central organisation in line with the CLARIN strategy; supervising the preparation of annual budgets and accounts; maintaining and developing strategic partnerships (academic, non-academic, industry, etc.); and monitoring the implementation and operation of the distributed infrastructure and the coordination of the activities of the CLARIN centers.


The ideal candidate has:

  • a record of relevant managerial responsibilities in an academic context or the wider public sector reflected in demonstrated ability to manage a team of dedicated professionals and a good capacity to understand the organisational and technical issues involved in the structure and governance of an international organisation with a federated digital service offer;
  • an academic background in a relevant domain and corresponding international network, reflected by: relevant experience in the European Research Area, the international arena and EC funding mechanisms, including a proven fundraising record; at least a basic understanding of the European Research Infrastructure landscape (ESFRI, EOSC, etc.); at least a basic understanding of the various parameters of the Open Science agenda and the implications for the SSH domain;
  • excellent communication skills in English, both in the function of managing the Office team and working with the Board of Directors, as well as liaising with CLARIN representatives and external parties.
  • ability to provide dynamic leadership that mentors, develops, and guides team members  to efficiently drive day-to-day operations;
  • the ability to use Dutch as a working language is an advantage.

We offer the position for a period of 1 year. After a positive evaluation, the appointment will become permanent. The job of Head of Operations is offered as a position that can be carried out full time (1.0 FTE), or part-time (minimum: 0.7 FTE), depending on possible other roles and responsibilities of the candidate. The position is embedded in the Faculty of Humanities of Utrecht University. The candidate is supposed to be able to work from the CLARIN Office premises in Utrecht. 

Salary ranges - depending on previous qualifications and experience - from a minimum of €5,294 to a maximum of €7,079 gross per month based on full-time employment (scale 13/14 according to the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities). Salaries are supplemented with a holiday bonus of 8% and a year-end bonus of 8,3% per year. In addition, Utrecht University offers excellent secondary conditions, including an attractive retirement scheme, (partly paid) parental leave and flexible employment.

CLARIN Office is hosted by Utrecht University (UU), as part of the Faculty of Humanities, home to a range of disciplines, including linguistics, history, art, philosophy, music, literature, religious studies, and media. The position of Head of Operations will be embedded in the department Digital Humanities IT.
For most of the CLARIN ERIC Office staff, the UU is acting as the employer and the Faculty of Humanities as the HR node. All UU contracts for CLARIN personnel are aligned with the collective labour agreement of UNL, the association of universities in the Netherlands.
