The chair Global Economic Challenges and Development plays a crucial role in strenghtening the research profile and expertise of USE and the section Applied Economics (inter)nationally in the important and blooming areas of the field of expertise in line with important societal challenges, the USE-RI research theme “Sustainability & Economic Development”, and in cooperation with relevant UU strategic themes, in particular “Pathways to Sustainability” and “Institutions for Open Societies”

Your main goal is to further advance and profile economic research and education according to the field of expertise in line with the importance of the chair. Apart from your own research, you will play a stimulating role in U.S.E. research, to promote a research environment according to Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion, and to engage in activities aimed at attracting external research funding through grants and consulting. Additional duties include supervision of PhD and Postdoctoral research resulting in theses and publications and the transfer of knowledge to society by organising events, such as conferences and workshops. Teaching will be multidisciplinary and applied in nature according to the U.S.E. educational profile. Cooperation with other chair groups within U.S.E. and Utrecht University in teaching and research is strongly encouraged. The tasks and responsibilities of the chair will include:
- performing and encouraging scientific research in the field of Global Economic Challenges and Development within a multidisciplinary setting;
- supervision of PhD theses;
- contributing to the research climate, among other by stimulating and supervising multidisciplinary research;
- contributing to financial sustainability, among others by active participation in external funding;
- participating in education in the U.S.E. Bachelor's and Master's programmes.
Wat breng je mee?
You are a passionate and creative academic with a strong background in economics and a genuine interest in Global Economic Challenges and Development. You have strong research skills and are willing and able to reach out to researchers active in other disciplines. This requires an open and inquisitive mind and a willingness to experiment and explore new avenues and methods in research and academic teaching. You have a strong publication track record, preferably testifying to the ability to work in multidisciplinary research teams on topics related to the position. Teaching experience in the field of global economic challenges is considered a plus.
As the position aims to address real world global challenges we also expect the candidate to be willing and able to communicate complex scientific results and insights to a wider audience of policy makers, societal stakeholders and the wider public. Proven ability in this respect is considered a plus.
The following profile will be expected of the chair holder:
- a doctorate in the field of economics or business:
- a strong track record in research as demonstrated among others by publications in nationally and internationally recognised journals;
- research interests in and (proven) experience with a multidisciplinary economics approach to the field of global economic challenges;
- proven experience as leader of a research group;
- willingness to put effort into the further development of teaching and research in Global Economic Challenges and Development from a multidisciplinary perspective within UU;
- a record of achievement in undergraduate and graduate teaching and administration;
- proven ability to acquire external funding;
- good communicative skills;
- fluency in English.
Wat bieden wij?
We offer:
- an employment contract for 12 months with the prospect of a permanent employment contract; If your full professorial tenure after the temporary appointment period of five years is unexpectedly not converted into a permanent appointment, permanent employment in a UHD position remains possible;
- a working week of 28-36 hours and a gross monthly salary between €6,894 and €10,038 in the case of full-time employment (salary scale H2 under the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO NU));
- 8% holiday pay and 8.3% year-end bonus;
- a pension scheme, partially paid parental leave and flexible terms of employment based on the CAO NU.
