The Department of International and European Law at the Utrecht University School of Law is looking for an assistant professor who will be involved in both bachelor and master programmes in the field of European and international law, in particular the Master programmes Law & Technology, European Law and Public International Law. The lecturer will be closely involved in the continuous assessment and further development of the Department’s teaching curricula. She or he will also supervise bachelor and master theses in various master programmes and may be assigned coordination and tutoring tasks. Although the emphasis will be on academic teaching (0.6 FTE), the position includes 0.4 FTE research. The candidate will be embedded within the Netherlands Institute of Human Rights (SIM) and within one of Utrecht Law School’s research programmes.


We are looking for a candidate with broad knowledge at the crossroads of human rights law and technology, with a strong preference for knowledge of EU and ECHR law, as Europe is the focus of our LLM in Law and Technology.

In particular the following requirements apply:

  • You have a PhD, preferably at the crossroads of human rights law, law & technology and European (EU and/or ECHR) law, as this is where the emphasis in teaching will be for this position.
  • You have experience and strong skills in academic teaching.
  • Experience in developing and coordinating courses is an asset.
  • You like to inspire students from undergraduate to graduate levels.
  • You are willing to teach undergraduate courses in the field of European Union law and Public International law.
  • You have a good command of written and spoken English, which is also apparent from publications and presentations in national and/or international settings.
  • You have working knowledge of Dutch and you are able to teach in Dutch. If you are a non-Dutch speaking candidate, we welcome your application and expect you to learn Dutch with a view to teaching in Dutch in the near future.
  • You have a Basic Teaching Qualification (BKO) or are willing to acquire one soon.
  • You are a team player and have strong interpersonal skills for building contact with colleagues and students in a diverse and international environment. Candidates with a background underrepresented in Dutch academia are encouraged to apply for this position.

Preferred starting date is 1 September 2023 at the latest.


This is an appointment of 1.0 FTE for the duration of one year. In case of good performance and a positive evaluation, after 12 months, the employment contract will be converted into a permanent employment contract. The minimum gross salary is € 3,974,- and the maximum gross salary is € 5,439,- (scale 11 of the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities) per month, at a full-time employment.
