Zelfstandig studeren

Research Ethics

  • 6 weeks / 7 hours per week
  • 1.5 EC
  • 385 Euro
  • Academic certificate: yes
  • Available for UU students (MA level): contact info@ethics.uu.nl

Volunteers are often asked to take part in medical research in order to improve the health and well-being of others, now and in the future. However noble the aim, this raises many ethical questions. How can we ensure that participants give their genuinely informed consent? What should be provided to control groups during clinical trials? How can we weigh the risks and benefits of various studies? How can we ensure scientific integrity in research? This course will deal with these and other issues, integrating theoretical insights and recent real-life case studies. More information and enrollment.

Ethics of Animal Welfare

  • 5 weeks
  • 2.5 EC
  • 785 Euro
  • Academic certificate: yes
  • Available for students UU (MA level): contact info@ethics.uu.nl

Although there are many courses available about ethics in general or animal welfare in particular, these subjects are rarely addressed in combination. However, any discussion of animal welfare requires an ability to understand and debate the ethical background and moral aspects involved. Veterinarians, as well as scientists, managers and policymakers working in the field of animal management, will therefore find this interdisciplinary course highly useful. It offers knowledge and tools that will enable participants to deal with ethical questions on both a theoretical and a practical level. More information: info@ethics.uu.nl.

Rights to a green future

  • 4 weeks / 7 hours per week
  • 1.5 EC
  • Costs: TBA
  • Available for students UU (MA level): yes
  • Academic certificate: yes

Debates surrounding climate change are highly normative, even though this normative aspect is often only implicitly present. Mitigation policies, for example, make assumptions regarding the ‘status quo’ and ‘normal’ or ‘acceptable’ standards of omissions. Our concerns for the future show that we assume that future generations have rights, and that we have a moral obligation to preserve the (environmental) circumstances which will allow these future generations to fulfill their own needs. What are the implications of such assumptions, when viewed from a philosophical perspective? More information: info@ethics.uu.nl.

Research integrity

  • 3 weeks / 3 hours per week
  • 0.5 EC
  • Costs: TBA
  • Available for students UU (MA level): yes
  • Academic certificate: yes

Through the years, the media have dealt with various instances of misconduct by scientists. Nowadays, most universities pay a lot of attention to the codes of conduct and expectations of researchers within the academy. Yet, what does research integrity involve besides safeguarding oneself from plagiarism and fraud? This course offers an interdisciplinary perspective on all types of questions that are related to research integrity. More information: info@ethics.uu.nl.
