SIG Augmented and Virtual Reality (XR)

Looking for an exciting new way to enhance learning? Want to offer your students experiences beyond the four walls of the classroom? Or maybe you're just interested in exploring the endless possibilities of virtual environments yourself? Then come join our Special Interest Group on Virtual and Augmented Reality (XR)!

XR is a general term that includes Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), Mixed Reality (MR) and all the technologies in between. With XR, teachers and students can experience things that were once impossible in a classroom setting (e.g. visit the Mount Everest or experience the cellular defence system from inside your body). And as these technologies continue to gain popularity, educators and researchers are increasingly interested in their potential for enhancing learning through immersion, presence, interactivity, and engagement.

Within Utrecht University various educators and researchers at different faculties are already experimenting with the use of AR and/or VR in their teaching and researching their affordances for education.  That's why we've created the SIG AR/VR - a platform for sharing educational and research experiences and sparking new pedagogical uses and research projects.

The SIG will organize meetings periodically to discuss the application of AR/VR to specific fields and to showcase currently running projects applying this technology.

In addition, the SIG will contact other SIG initiatives in the Netherlands and international partner universities (LERU) in order to share pedagogical experiences and research results over the added value of using these technologies. The SIG AR/VR will stimulate joint project proposals as much as possible.

Don't miss out on this exciting opportunity to explore the possibilities of AR and VR in education! If you would like to be involved in this SIG, please contact cat@uu.nl. And if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to the coordinators below or to cat@uu.nl.
