Vassilis Dokalis wint Françoisprijs 2020 voor de beste masterscriptie op het gebied van internationaal publiekrecht

Met een scriptie over de bescherming van biodiversiteit in de Noordelijke ijszee heeft Vassilis Dokalis de Françoisprijs 2020 gewonnen. Hij is in 2019 afgestudeerd in het LLM Public International Law masterprogramma aan de Universiteit Utrecht.

De Françoisprijs 2020 is uitgereikt door de Nederlandse Vereniging voor Internationaal Recht. Vassilis Dokalis kreeg de prijs voor zijn masterscriptie “Protecting the North from going south? Developing area-based management tools for the conservation of marine biodiversity of areas beyond national jurisdiction in the Arctic Ocean” geschreven onder begeleiding van Alex Oude Elferink.

De Françoisprijs is een tweejaarlijkse prijs voor de beste masterscriptie op het gebied van internationaal publiekrecht of internationaal privaatrecht, geschreven aan een Nederlandse universiteit in de afgelopen twee jaar. De inzendingen worden onder meer beoordeeld op hun originaliteit, hun diepgaand begrip van het internationaal recht op een bepaald gebied en de gebruikte taal. Dit jaar bestond de jury uit professor René de Groot, emeritus-hoogleraar internationaal privaatrecht aan de Universiteit van Maastricht, dr. Christophe Paulussen van het T.M.C. Asser Instituut, en dr. Ineke Boerefijn, van het Studie- en Informatiecentrum Mensenrechten.

Het juryrapport merkt het volgende op over de scriptie van Vassilis:

This thesis covered a very difficult, but highly topical issue, of great relevance to our current and especially future society. We learned a lot reading this interesting and important thesis, which has a good structure and which uses a wealth of literature. Dokalis covers all the applicable legal regimes in detail, as well as the implications of their co-existence. To us, he has shown that he clearly masters this quite specific and technical topic superbly, while at the same time, he is aware of the limitations of the thesis, as well as the bigger picture, that is: the geo-political context.
