1966 PhD in psychonomie aan de Universiteit Münster (Duitsland). 1968 tweede promotie in experimentele sociale psychologie aan de Universiteit London (LSE). Tussen 1968 en 1972 werkzaam als docent/onderzoeker in sociale psychologie bij verschillende universiteiten in Engeland (Bristol, Sussex) en de Verenigde Staten (North Carolina, Massachusetts). Van 1972 tot 1991 hoogleraar sociale psychologie aan de Universiteiten van Marburg en Tübingen. Sinds 1992 hoogleraar van sociale en organisatie psychologie aan de Universiteit Utrecht. Gedurende deze periode ook 6 jaren wetenschappelijk directeur geweest van de onderzoekschool "Psychologie en Gezondheid".
