Ora Oudgenoeg-Paz focuses on early motor and cognitive development. Her main interest are the relations between motor development, spatial cognition and the development of language.

Inspired by embodiment theory, she studies how the attainment of central developmental milestones during infancy and early childhood affects the way children explore their environment and how this exploration contributes to the development of their spatial cognition and (spatial) language.

Project:
L2TOR - Second language tutoring of young children using a social robot

The L2TOR project capitalises on recent developments in human-robot interaction in which the use of social robots is explored in the context of teaching and tutoring. Social robots have been shown to have marked benefits over screenbased tutoring technologies, and have demonstrable positive impacts on motivation in learners and their learning outcomes. L2TOR focuses on the domain of second language learning in early childhood: due to increased mobility of European citizens and increasing internationalisation, most children in Europe will be required to fluently use two or more languages. As language acquisition benefits from early, personalised and interactive tutoring, current language tutoring delivery is often ill-equipped to deal with this. As resources are insufficient to offer one-to-one tutoring with (near) native speakers in educational and home contexts, L2TOR will further the science and technology of language tutoring robots, with a strong focus on multimodal interactive tutoring for young children (4 years of age). L2TOR will focus on native speaking Dutch, German and Turkish children learning English. In addition, Turkish immigrant children in the Netherlands and Germany will be supported by a robot in acquiring Dutch and German. To realise this ambition L2TOR needs to address both technical aspects -such as multimodal interaction, human-robot interaction management and social signal processing-, pedagogical aspects -such as exploring the pedagogy of social robots and the use of social robot to assist in language tutoring- and developmental psychology aspects -such as understanding how children learn a first and second language from others and how this can be transposed to learning from robots.

VLOT: Een nieuw instrument voor het evalueren van taalomgeving bij jonge kinderen

De VLOT (Vragenlijst Ouders Thuistaalomgeving) is een screeningsinstrument dat gebruikt kan worden door consultatiebureaus om risicofactoren in de taalomgeving van tweejarige kinderen te signaleren ten behoeve van advisering van ouders en toeleiding van kinderen naar voorzieningen voor voor- en vroegschoolse educatie en ander activiteiten. Om de VLOT te valideren en optimale afkapwaarden te bepalen wordt een longitudinaal onderzoek uitgevoerd waarin de betrouwbaarheid, begripsvaliditeit, predictieve waarde en sensitiviteit-specificiteit van de VLOT worden onderzocht.

De vroege ontwikkeling van ruimtelijke cognitie: een embodied dynamic systems studie 01-10-2012 tot 01-10-2014
Algemene projectbeschrijving

Adopting a dynamic systems framework, this study aims to gain understanding of the development of visuospatial cognition. Attainment of motor milestones is hypothesised to increase children’s opportunities for exploration, which may propel visuospatial cognition and lead to better academic skills over time. This model is tested by (1) assessing (using eye-tracking) exploration and visuospatial cognition in infants with varying walking experience, and (2) assessing the longitudinal relations between walking attainment, visuospatial cognition and pre-academic skills. Results will provide a window into the development of visuospatial cognition, and valuable input to early-years education regarding the importance of creating opportunities for exploration. This project is carried out in collaboration between the Department of Pedagoical Sciences and the Department of Experimental Psychology.

Algemene projectbeschrijving

Vertrekkend vanuit theorieën over belichaamde cognitie, worden de dynamische relaties onderzocht tussen de sensorimotorische ontwikkeling, ruimtelijke exploratie, ruimtelijke cognitie en ruimtelijke (verwijs- en handelings)taal. De hypothese is dat ruimtelijke taal voortkomt uit vroege sensorimotorische ervaringen en ruimtelijke cognitie.
