Profiel

I am a PhD candidate in the Mathematical Institute at Utrecht University advised by Dr. Tristan van Leeuwen, Prof. Joost Batenburg and Prof. Wim Mulder. My research focuses on developing methods for imaging salt bodies using Full-Waveform Inversion. For developing these algorithms, I use tools in machine learning and discrete tomography. I’m currently looking into total variation methods and level-set approach.

I obtained my undergraduate education at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT-B) through the integrated B.Tech. + M.Tech. programme in Aerospace Engineering with specialization in Operations Research. My Master's thesis focused on assessment of risk aversion in coordinated supply chains through contracts. In Bachelor's thesis, I worked on development of guidance system for Min-Aerial vehicles in thermal updrafts. At IIT Bombay, I was a member of Aerospace Engineering Association of India. As a summer intern, I have worked for Honeywell on general aviation system integration bench in Summer 2013 and for Rediff.com on data science projects in Summer 2014.

I am passionate about education and have been involved in educational outreach and mentoring activities. Along with research and education, I cherish interesting conversations on startup and artificial intelligence.

Reconstruction of Salt Bodies in Seismic Full-Waveform Inversion

The interior of the earth can be imaged using seismic waves by solving a non-linear inverse problem. Such images are the main tool for locating oil and gas reservoirs in geologically complex areas. Of special interest are subsurface salt bodies, as reservoirs are often found next to or underneath them. Resolving such salt bodies is challenging and new techniques are needed to obtain better images of the structures beneath the salt. We aim to develop such techniques by including prior information in the reconstruction; salt bodies are continuous objects with (known) constant properties. The reconstruction of such objects is the subject of discrete tomography, and effective algorithms have been developed for linear inverse problems in tomography. Generalizing these techniques to non- linear problems, we can obtain more accurate estimates of the shape of the salt bodies and the properties of the earth
layers beneath them.

The Project is funded by Industrial Collaboration of Foundation of Fundamental Research on Matter (NWO-FOM) and Royal Dutch Shell. It is a part of Industrial Partnership Program (IPP) 'Computational Sciences for Energy Research.'
