Wijnand W. Mijnhardt (1950) has been full Professor of Cultural History at Utrecht University (1991-2007) and visiting Professor of Early Modern Intellectual History at the University of California in Los Angeles (2001-2005). He has held a personal Chair of Comparative History of the Sciences and the Humanities (2007-2019), and he is founder and past director of the Descartes Centre for the History and Philosophy of the Sciences at Utrecht University. Emeritus since September 2019.

Mijnhardt has held fellowships from the William Andrews Clark Memorial Library in Los Angeles and from the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Studies in Wassenaar. In 2005 he was a member of the Institute for Advanced Studies in Princeton and in the 2006/07 academic year he was a Senior Research Fellow at the Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles. In 2004 he was elected as a member of the Royal Dutch Academy of the Sciences.

He successfully completed the following externally funded research programs: the NWO priority program Dutch Culture in a European Context  (1991-1997). the Getty Picart research project (2006-2010), the  NWO program the Balance between City and Countryside (2006-2011) and the NWO program Learned Correspondences (2008-2013). Together with Sven Dupre from 2015-2019 he completed a joint research program on the origins of the modern knowledge society of the Berlin Max Planck Center for the History of Science and the Descartes Center.

He published widely on Dutch intellectual history, on the Dutch Republic in the eighteenth century and on the Enlightenment. With Margaret Jacob, he edited The Dutch Republic in the Eighteenth Century: Decline, Enlightenment and Revolution (Cornell UP, 1992). He edited special issues of the Rivista Storica Italiana and of Eighteenth-Century Studies. With Joost Kloek, he authored 1800, Blueprints for a National Community, Vol. 2 in the series ‘Dutch Culture in a European Perspective’ (Palgrave MacMillan, 2005).  In the last couple of years  two books appeared which he edited and authored together with Lynn Hunt and Margaret Jacob: The First Global Vision of Religion: Bernard Picart’s Religious Ceremonies and Customs of All the Peoples of the World (Los Angeles: Getty Publications, 2009) and The Book that Changed Europe: Picart and Bernard's Religious Ceremonies of the World  (Cambridge Mass., Harvard University Press, 2010). In A New Template for Dutch History (Zwolle 2011) he published, together with Paul Brusse, a new model for the interpretation of Dutch modern history. In preparation are Publishing and the European Enlightenment. The life and times of the Amsterdam booksellers Jean Frédéric Bernard (1680-1744) and Marc Michel Rey (1720-1780) and a book in the Dutch language: Het Huis van de Bastaard. Een biografie van Slotstraat 10-12 in Culemborg.
