Sophie is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Education, as part of the Sectorplan.
Sophie’s research focuses on two main areas: (1) promoting the adaptation of teacher-student interactions and teachers’ instructional decisions to the diverse needs of individual students, and (2) enhancing students’ self-regulated learning skills in primary and secondary education. In this field, she's supervising Stephanie Hepner in her PhD research on how secondary school students' judgments of their text comprehension can be improved.
During her PhD research — which centered on improving both students’ and teachers’ judgments of primary school students’ mathematics performance — Sophie also worked as a primary school teacher for six years. This combination of academic and practical experience continues to shape her approach to research and teaching. She is passionate about educating future (primary school) teachers and enjoys working on projects that integrate her practical experience with her academic expertise. One example of this is her supervision of a Professional Learning Community in which she collaborates with secondary school teachers to improve students’ basic mathematics skills, as part of the project ‘Werkplaats Onderwijs en Onderzoek Oudenbosch’: https://kohnstamminstituut.nl/een-basis-voor-de-toekomst/.
Sophie is involved in several courses, primarily within the ALPO program but also in the Bachelor and Master programs in Educational Sciences. These include: Educational Psychology, Design of Learning Environments – Advanced, Interaction in the Classroom, Orthopedagogy, Bachelor Thesis, Academic Professional, and Study Career Guidance.
Her expertise lies especially in conducting quantitative research. She has a particular interest in advanced multilevel models and enjoys working in R.
