Profiel

Teresa de la Hera is postdoctoral researcher and lecturer in New Media and Digital Culture at the Department of Media and Culture Studies at Utrecht University, where she is member of the Center for the Study of Digital Games and Play. She started her academic career in Spain in 2006 where she conducted research in the fields of new media and persuasive games. Later on, in 2011, she moved to the Netherlands where she obtained an International PhD Fellowship to finish her PhD “Persuasive Structures in Advergames” at Utrecht University. At this moment she is working on the NWO funded research project "Persuasive Gaming in Context" in which she explores the potential of digital games as media for persuasion. Her research interests and expertise involve the use of digital games and playful applications of new technologies (such as virtual and augmented reality) for social change and inclusion of minority groups.

Project:
Playful VR and AR experiences for social inclusion
03-10-2016 tot 01-11-2017
Algemene projectbeschrijving

This project addresses if and how VR/AR can help people dealing with permanent or temporary situations of social isolation by providing them an opportunity to escape from the limited space in which they are confined and to reintegrate in the society beyond isolation. The seed money invested in this project is used to build a strong consortium of international partners necessary to address the related challenging research questions and to support the writing of a high quality research proposal.

Ice skating exergame played by refugees and Dutch children in school classes
01-10-2016 tot 31-10-2017
Algemene projectbeschrijving

The purpose of this project is to explore how exergames (digital games combining exercise with game play) and the playful interactions fostered during play can contribute to establish, reinforce or change the nature of social interactions among refugees and Dutch children in school classes. Exergame play enables multiple players to compete or cooperate on a team, thereby providing both a virtual and a real social interaction. Because exergame play allows youth to take their eyes off their peers and direct their attention toward a screen, game play may reduce body self-consciousness during physical activity.

Persuasive gaming. From theory-based design to validation and back
01-10-2013 tot 30-09-2017
Algemene projectbeschrijving

Keywords: game; playful interaction; storytelling; persuasiveness; case-based validation research; research through design.

The research in this project is concerned with the characteristics, design principles, and effectiveness of persuasive gaming. We study gaming practices that combine the dissemination of information with attempts to engage players in particular behaviors and attitudes. A unique feature of the project is the collaboration with partners in the Dutch game industry enabling us to immediately relate and apply our knowledge drawn from Game Studies, Media Studies, validation research and research on Game Design to practical demands of the industry. Theoretically, we develop the innovative approach of a constant and intense interaction between what is drawn from theory with the actual design of game experiences. The subsequent merger between design and validation research provides a crucial testing ground to assess and validate the value of the knowledge we aim to produce. The process of persuasion is approached from a humanities perspective focusing on the interplay of different persuasive dimensions, including storytelling and playful interaction. The cases extend beyond traditional videogames incorporating also transmedia storytelling platforms and ambient games creating play experiences closely integrated in the context of e.g. city life, therapy or education. The ultimate goal is the construction of a dynamic model for persuasive game development and implementation that is accessible for the industry as well as the research community. We are confident that this close collaboration between the industry and the academic world will contribute to improving the international competitive position of the Dutch game industry.

Exploring the possibilities of intergenerational digital game design 01-09-2015 tot 31-08-2016
Algemene projectbeschrijving

This explorative study aims to shed light on intergenerational digital game design patterns. The question is how intergenerational gaming between older and younger individuals (e.g. grandparents and grandchildren) can be designed and used to promote their mental, physical and social wellbeing/bonding. Output: a literature review and a research protocol.
