The BENELUX, Regional Groupings and the Dynamics of European Integration: Contemporary and Historical Perspectives, Brill- 2023
(Co-editor and contributor for the forthcoming volume, winter 2023, Brill Publishers)
From its inception as a regional organization (the ECSC) the EU has been greatly influenced by regional organizations; NATO, Comecon, the Warsaw Pact and the WEU to name a few. These organizations have at times fostered and hindered further integration, but their impact on the course of integration, though at times difficult to clearly define, has nonetheless been significant. As the EU faces an uncertain future, and the wisdom of the rapid enlargements of the past is being questioned, Regional organization have once again assumed a significant role in inter-member discussion, initiatives and planning. In order to clarify some of the effects touched on above, the book examines the effect that Regional organizations such as the BENELUX and Visegrad Group, have had, are having or may have on European Integration.
