My funded research projects are on behalf of KNMI and Southampton: ODYSEA (Ocean forcing atmospheric variability); SMURPHS (Role of the ocean in the climate hiatus); Blue Action (Connection between North Atlantic and Arctic Sea-Ice and Weather over Europe): PRIMAVERA (Impact of mesoscales and high resolution in the ocean on coupled climate variability). I am engaged with U-Utrecht in submitted and developing proposals on tipping points in climate; paleo-oceanography; and the role of Antarctic mass loss, in particular ice-shelf - ocean interaction and basal melt, on sea level rise. In the UK I work with my postdoc Jenny Mecking on the impact of the ocean on extreme weather and improving seasonal predictions (using an novel initialisation method). This research is carried out with the UK Met Office coupled climate model “HadGEM3”. I also work in Southampton on modelling the Antarctic Ice Sheet, together with Master Students and a senior modeller (Jeff Blundell), using the ice-sheet model “PISM”.
