Profiel

Stefanie Lemke is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Netherlands Institute of Human Rights (SIM). With the Prince Claus Chair in Development and Equity (hosted by Javier Couso, Universidad Diego Portales, Chile), she has led an interdisciplinary NWO-WOTRO research project on the relationship between judicial independence and human rights in non-consolidated democracies, with an emphasis on Latin American and European countries. Previously, she served as a senior researcher in the rule of law and legal empowerment with the University of Cologne, Germany (2006-2015). She has a background in law (with a strong focus on comparative constitutional law and public international law) and studied in several legal systems (including Argentina, France and Spain). While pursuing her Ph.D. thesis on Human Rights Lawyering and Access to Justice in Europe she was a visiting fellow at the University of Oxford and the University of London, both UK.

She also pursued strategic casework (including high profile cases on counter-terrorism practices and sexualised violence in the Americas, Europe, the Middle East, South East Asia and the US) before the International Criminal Court and the UN with the European Centre for Constitutional and Human Rights e.V. (ECCHR), an international Berlin based human rights NGO (International Crimes and Accountability programme). Furthermore, she practiced with the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (Department for Governance, the Rule of Law and Democracy), taught regional human rights systems, legal skills and Latin American politics to practitioners, diplomats and students at think tanks and universities, and worked with global and local law firms across Europe. She has published widely and is a regular speaker at international conferences.
