Stratigraphy & paleontology
n.h.hohmann@uu.nl

I am a PhD candidate in Stratigraphy and Paleontology at Utrecht University, where I study how geological processes shape the information preserved in the rock and fossil record. My research focuses on stratigraphic paleobiology, combining forward modelling and statistical approaches to understand how sedimentation, erosion, and preservation bias influence interpretations of biodiversity and evolutionary patterns. Currently, my research focus is the integration of stratigraphic information into phylogenetic inference.

I develop open, modular scientific software to support reproducible research in geoscience. I am the lead developer of several R packages, including StratPal for building stratigraphic–paleobiological simulation pipelines, admtools for age–depth modelling, and stratcols for analysing stratigraphic order. These tools are designed to integrate ecological, evolutionary, and stratigraphic processes in transparent workflows, with a focus on usability, extensibility, and interoperability within the R ecosystem.

I am committed to open science and to integrating computational methods into teaching. I develop and share code, data, and documentation through open platforms such as GitHub, and design reproducible workflows that others can reuse and adapt. In my teaching and training activities, I use interactive tools and simulations to help students explore how geological processes influence the rock record, with an emphasis on hands-on, data-driven learning and open educational materials.
