My research focuses on understanding adolescent social and cognitive development. I am fascinated by this period, which is characterized by dramatic social change at an age where social relationships are as essential as they are changeable. In my work I aim to elucidate the underlying abilities which allow adolescents to flexibly navigate their increasingly complex social environments. This has included studying the development of socio-cognitive abilities such as emotion recognition, perspective taking and interpersonal trust, as well understanding how the social context can impact these abilities. In recent years I have also become increasingly interested in the effects social relationships may have on adolescent mental health, and specifically on internalizing symptoms.

Elder: Unravelling the psychological consequences of negative life events by improved description, explanation, and generalization.
Algemene projectbeschrijving

Major negative life events such as unemployment and widowhood are associated with increased psychopathology and loneliness and reduced self-esteem. However, our measurement designs and statistical methods to detect and describe complex changes are still crude. Furthermore, it is unclear (1) what drives these developmental trajectories, (2) what factors predict heterogeneous developmental trajectories, and (3) how these developmental trajectories generalize across cultures, especially to non-Western ones. The proposed research aims to unravel the effects of negative life events on psychological functioning by improved description, explanation, and generalization.
