Marijke de Valck (1975) is associate professor in film and media studies in the Department of Media and Culture. She holds a PhD from the University of Amsterdam / Amsterdam School of Cultural Analysis (2006, cum laude). 

 

She is specialized in transnational media cultures, media industries, and art cinema. She studies the network and role of film festivals using a combination of critical theory, textual analysis and approaches from the social sciences. Additionally, her work involves cultural analysis, conceptual reflection and curating of (media) art, with resilience as special thematic interest. She has also worked and published on art and activism, archiving, television, and world cinema. 

 

Together with Skadi Loist Marijke founded the Film Festival Research Network (2008) which connects more than 600 researchers and practitioners in the field. She is co-founder of the NECS workgroup on Film Festival Research and co-edits the NECSUS festival review section as well as the Palgrave Macmillan book series Framing Film Festivals. She sits on the advisory board of the journal Film Studies (Manchester University Press) and the book series Remapping World Cinemas: Regional and Global Transformations (Routledge).
