Marian Jongmans studeerde Bewegingswetenschappen aan de Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam. Hierna verrichte zij promotieonderzoek aan het Institute of Education (University College London, UK). Het betrof een longitudinaal onderzoek naar de relatie tussen hersenschade in de neonatale periode en motorische, cognitieve en sociaal-emotionele ontwikkeling op de basisschoolleeftijd van te vroeg geboren kinderen. Vervolgens werkte zij als 'research fellow' aan de University of Bristol (UK) aan een studie naar de ontwikkelingsstatus van jonge kinderen met een verhoogd risico op ontwikkelingsbeperkingen als onderdeel van de 'Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents And Children' (ALSPAC).

Weer terug in Nederland werkte zij als docent-onderzoeker Kinder- en Jeugdpsychologie aan de Universiteit van Tilburg met als aandachtsgebieden de ontwikkeling van te vroeg geboren kinderen en de motorische problemen die kinderen met een Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) ondervinden in het dagelijks functioneren thuis en op school.

In 2001 verhuisde zij naar de Universiteit Utrecht om werkzaam te zijn als hoogleraar Pedagogiek in het bijzonder de Gehandicaptenzorg in combinatie met de functie als onderzoeker op de afdeling Neonatologie van het Wilhelmina Kinderziekenhuis (UMCU).

In de periode 2007 - 2010 doorliep zij de opleiding tot gezondheidszorgpsycholoog op de afdeling Medische psychologie en maatschappelijk werk van het Wilhelmina Kinderziekenhuis (UMCU) en was tevens tevens hoogleraar Pediatrische Psychologie op dezelfde afdeling.

Sinds januari 2018 combineert zij de functie van vicedecaan & directeur van de Graduate School van de Faculteit Sociale Wetenschappen aan de Universiteit Utrecht met die van gezondheidszorgpsycholoog bij de afdeling Neonatologie van het Wilhelmina Kinderziekenhuis (UMCU).
