Martijn doet onderzoek op het raakvlak van politiek en economie, met een focus op de Europese Unie. Hij publiceert  in academische en populaire media over Europees handelsbeleid en Europees beschermde streekproducten ("beschermde geografische aanduidingen") zoals Parmaham en Gouda Holland. Daarnaast bestudeert hij het institutioneel ontwerp van de EU (Artikel 50/Brexit, "Gele kaart" van nationale parlementen).
