Matisse Huiskens is a Lecturer in Modern and Contemporary Art. On 15 December 2023 he defended his dissertation Beyond Being an Italian Sculptor: The Exile of Fred Carasso in the Low Countries after the Rise of Fascism, 1928-1958 as a joint doctoral project at the University of Amsterdam and the University of Salerno, Italy. For this research he received fellowships at the Dutch institutes in Rome (KNIR) and Florence (NIKI). His broader research interests resonate with this project and focus on the relations between art, politics, and migration. He is also interested in modern sculpture, national identity, and exhibition history. His work as an art critic and art historian has been published in journals including De Witte Raaf, Metropolis M, and Urban History. In 2022, he won the essay prize of philosophy festival Drift in Amsterdam.
