Profiel

Liesbeth van de Grift is Assistant Professor in the History of International Relations. She specializes in the international history of rural and environmental governance in the twentieth century. In her work, she focuses on the changing relationship between governing authorities, expert communities, interest groups, and citizens. Topics that she has worked on include practices of land reclamation and rural resettlement (internal colonisation), and the role of consumer and environmental organisations in European governance.

At Utrecht University, Van de Grift coordinates the Global Studies Programme of the Utrecht Centre for Global Challenges (UGlobe), which is a centre supporting and encouraging study and research on international issues across disciplines. Furthermore, she is involved in the interdisciplinary research programme Institutions for Open Societies. She is also a member of the Utrecht Young Academy. Liesbeth van de Grift studied Modern History at the University of Amsterdam and the Free University Berlin. She graduated cum laude in 2003 with a master’s thesis on the fall of Serbian dictator Slobodan Milosevic in 2000. After that, she worked as project manager at the Alfred Mozer Foundation (now Foundation Max van der Stoel) and the European Forum for Democracy and Solidarity, international foundations aimed at contributing to the development of democracy in (then) Eastern and Southeastern Europe.

From 2005 to 2012, Van de Grift worked at Utrecht University. She wrote a dissertation on the post-1945 transition to communism in Soviet-occupied Europe, which led to the publication of Securing the Communist State: The Reconstruction of Coercive Institutions in the Soviet Zone of Germany and Romania, 1944-1948in the Harvard Cold War Studies Book Series. She translated this work into Dutch: Voorwaarts en vergeten. De overgang van fascisme naar communisme in Oost-Europa, 1944-1948 (Amsterdam: Ambo Anthos, 2010). In 2009-2010 she worked as a university lecturer in the section of Political History and subsequently became a postdoctoral researcher when she was awarded a Veni research grant by NWO. This allowed her to carry out the project “Brave New Worlds: Internal Colonization in Europe, 1918-1940” (2011-2014).

In 2012, Van de Grift became Assistant Professor at the Departments of Political History and German Language and Culture at Radboud University Nijmegen. Among other things, she served as director of studies of the BA programme German Language and Culture. In 2015, she returned to Utrecht to become Assistant Professor in the section History of International Relations.

Liesbeth van de Grift was a visiting scholar twice. In 2010 she was Visiting Professor at the University of California, Los Angeles and in Spring 2017, she was a Visiting Fellow at the European University Institute in Florence.

The Voice of Nature (2014-)

“Nature” became contested long before the rise of environmental movements in the 1970s. It has been at the heart of political debate ever since the modern state increasingly intervened in nature and more citizens demanded voice in the 19th century. This research agenda charts the history of “the politics of nature” in the 19th and 20th centuries as one of claim-making and contention, in the name of a variety of interests (economic modernization and profitability, scientific progress; the liveability of citizens or future generations; flora and fauna, biodiversity or 'nature' at large), and by a myriad of political and societal actors. It seeks to explain why some claims were rejected, while others were accepted and enforced; and show how the contention over “nature” has led to new institutional arrangements and a redefinition of what constitutes modern democracy as such.

This research agenda, developed together with Wim van Meurs (Radboud University Nijmegen), has led to various publications on topics such as the role of environmental NGOs in European governance and environmentalism in Southeastern Europe. Furthermore, MA students have contributed by writing theses on the relationship between Greenpeace International and environmental organisations in communist Europe, the effectiveness of palm oil certification schemes, and NATO's Committee on the Challenges of Modern Society.

Brave New Worlds: Internal Colonisation in Interwar Europe, 1918-1940 (VENI, funded by NWO) (2011-2014)

In this postdoctoral project, Liesbeth van de Grift studied discourses and practices of internal colonisation in interwar Europe from a transnational perspective. Internal colonisation was a widespread phenomenon in interwar Europe, where attempts to build new communities on semi- or unoccupied lands were buttressed by a strong belief in progress and in the ability of man to master nature. Everywhere, rural resettlement schemes were underpinned by quests for food security, social improvement, national grandeur, and the modernisation of agricultural production and rural societies. In her research, she has shown that practices of internal colonization exemplified the rise of the modern interventionist state and reflected the expansion of state responsibilities and the increased involvement of experts in government in the interwar period.

Liesbeth van de Grift has published about this research in several international journals, such as Contemporary European History and Agricultural History as well as in volumes, the most important being Governing the Rural in Interwar Europe (2017), a volume co-edited with Amalia Ribi Forclaz and published by Routledge. This book addresses interwar endeavors to reform and modernize rural societies and livelihoods.

Securing the Communist State: The Reconstruction of Coercive Institutions in the Soviet Zone of Germany and Romania, 1944-1948 (PhD research, 2005-2008)

From Berlin to Bucharest, from Warsaw to Sofia, Soviet tanks crossed national borders across East Central Europe at the end of the Second World War. The arrival of the Red Army marked an important turn in history. Within only a few years, the often unpopular communist parties developed into political organizations with mass followings. They managed to seize power, eliminate political opposition to their rule, and purge the state apparatus of undesirable personnel.

In her research, Liesbeth van de Grift provided a new understanding of the communist takeovers using recently disclosed material from the communist archives in Berlin and Bucharest. She revealed how these communist parties gained control over the security apparatus after 1945 in East Central Europe from a transitional justice perspective, focusing on purges and personnel policies. Her dissertation showed the dilemmas that communist parties were confronted with in carrying out a fundamental break with the past.
