Lapo Mughini-Gras is epidemiologist and senior scientific advisor at the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM), and associate professor of veterinary public health at the Institute for Risk Assessment Sciences (IRAS) of Utrecht University.

After graduating with honours in veterinary medicine from Bologna University, Italy (2008), he worked for one year as pest manager in training at Bologna City Council. This was followed by a PhD (2010-2013) in epidemiology at the Italian National Institute of Health (Istituto Superiore di Sanità - ISS). In 2015, he completed a post-graduate veterinary specialization in livestock health and production at Perugia University, Italy. During 2013-2019 (intermittently), he worked as epidemiology consultant (distance-work) for the Regional Veterinary Institute of North-East Italy (Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale delle Venezie - IZSVe). He moved to the Netherlands in 2013 to join the RIVM and Utrecht University. He is a registered veterinarian in the Netherlands (CIBG 670383) and member of the The Royal Dutch Society for Veterinary Medicine (KNMvD).

His main research interests are the epidemiology, statistical modelling and risk assessment of infectious diseases, particularly foodborne and zoonotic infections and antimicrobial resistance, at the human-animal-environment interface (One Health approach). He is particularly interested in developing models and conducting analyses to understand the sources, transmission routes, risk factors and (health and socioeconomic) consequences of these infections, to assess their burden and identify priorities for public health. His research aims at improving public, animal and environmental health by providing quantitative, risk-based evidence that binds science to (data-driven) policy making.

Besides research, he is engaged in several educational activities for undergraduate students, PhD candidates, junior personnel and trainees. He is member of various expert groups nationally and internationally, including his current appointment as member of WHO’s Foodborne Disease Burden Epidemiology Reference Group (FERG) and EFSA’s Expert Panel on Biological Hazards (BIOHAZ 2024-2029), as well as the Expert Panel of the Netherlands Veterinary Medicines Authority (SDa), and the Advisory Board of the Dutch Organization for Healthcare Research and Innovation (ZonMw). He is bilingual Italian and Spanish, and fluent in English, Dutch and French. Since 2010, he has co-authored over 140 papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals and books.
