Ik verricht digitaal historisch onderzoek (digital history, digital humanities) en heb een passie voor de programmeertaal Python. Mijn huidige projecten zijn gericht op de digitale analyse van culturele 'memes' (steeds terugkerende woordpatronen en concepten) in de negentiende en twintigste eeuw, op basis van kranten, tijdschriften, parlementaire verslagen en andere gedigitaliseerde teksten. Dit onderzoek sluit aan bij de diverse, onderling verbonden terreinen waarop ik als cultuurhistoricus heb gewerkt, in het bijzonder de ideeën-, religie-, media- en communicatiegeschiedenis. In 2022 werden mij samen met Pim Huijnen de Richard Deswarte Prize in Digital History toegekend.

Ik ben werkzaam geweest als hoogleraar Cultuurgeschiedenis aan de Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (2007-2009) en vervolgens als hoogleraar Cultuurgeschiedenis aan de Universiteit Utrecht (2009-2019). Van 2013 tot en met 2018 was ik departementshoofd van het departement Geschiedenis en Kunstgeschiedenis. Thans ben ik hoogleraar in de digitale geschiedenis namens het Netherlands eScience Center, het nationale expertisecentrum voor onderzoekssoftware waarvan ik sinds 2020 als algemeen directeur fungeer.

Ik ben mede-oprichter en redactielid van het open-access tijdschrift International Journal for History, Culture and Modernity. Daarnaast ben ik lid van de stuurgroep van de Research Software Alliance (ReSA).
