Jamie is a Postdoctoral Researcher working in the Parcels group, specifically on the VirtualShip project with Erik van Sebille (Principle Investigator) and Emma Daniƫls (Postdoctoral Researcher). This tool is used to give students experience similar to sea-going fieldwork, analyse ocean data and also provides a platform for scientists to plan their future research. Jamie focusses on developing the Python code base as well as undertaking educational research to understand how to most effectively apply this tool.
Jamie did his PhD at the University of Exeter where his research focussed on seasonal forecasting of the European North-West shelf seas. He identified sources of and limits to seasonal predictability in a global dynamical forecasting system and used large-ensemble simulations to explore present-day risk of marine heatwaves. Prior to this, Jamie conducted research on mesoscale oceanography (eddies) physical-biogeochemical extreme events.
