Adriaan van der Loos, PhD, is an Assistant Professor at the Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development in the Innovation Studies group. His overarching field of study is sustainability transitions, with a particular emphasis on the energy transition. Innovation systems and economic geography, in particular, guide his thinking. Empirically, he has focussed on offshore wind in the Netherlands, Norway and Europe in general. 

His has a background in environmental governance and has particularly emphasized transnational private regulation, certification, non-state business-NGO partnerships and bottom-up governance practices. He has specifically worked on private forestry regulation in Russia and Central & Eastern Europe, including extensive field-research in Northwest Russia; additionally, he conducted quantitative studies on country-wide private regulation adoption characteristics.
