My research interests focus on the development and cultivation of creativity in young children. In 2012 I started my master study in a creativity lab in China, and in 2013-2014, I conducted my first research project on designing and implementing a creativity training program (“Learn to Think” program) for young children aged four to six. After I obtained my master degree, I continued with the research topic of creativity and started my PhD project in 2015 in Utrecht University, investigating the process of divergent thinking and its development throughout the preschool years. Together with my supervisors, we developed a coding scheme and used it to analyze four- to six-year-old children’s protocols, which were obtained when they were performing on a creativity task, in order to obtain a better understanding of the processes that underlie young children’s divergent thinking. In addition, we used also standard tests on creativity and executive functions to assess a group of children for a period of two years and by which aimed to gain a better picture on the development of creativity in the early years. Beyond my PhD project, I am also interested in developing new tools for assessing young children’s creativity based on their thinking process instead of their products, and furthermore, providing insights in designing creativity-oriented teaching-learning activities and personalized instructions for educational practice.
