Francesca studied Marine Environmental Sciences at the University of Bologna (Italy) and received a PhD at the same University working on Mediterranean Sea modern ecology and environment and (recent) past ecology. She moved to the Netherlands as postdoc in 2005. 

Since 2018, Francesca is Associate Professor (and since 2024 UHD1) at the Dept of Earth Sciences and leads the Marine Sciences master program. Francesca has joined several sea-going expeditions (including drilling IODP expeditions), which she loves, although she will never have a sea-stomach.
