PROFILE

I am an International historian with a particular interest in the Global Cold War. I was a postdoctoral fellow at New York University (2015), a National Research Foundation Innovation Postdoctoral Fellow of the International Studies Group at the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein, South Africa (2016) and a Lecturer in Conflict Studies at the University of Amsterdam. I have published in international journals and am an editor for history, politics, IR and social science at the European Journal of American Studies.

My work focuses predominantly on Africa's international history as well as European Integration, but I also look at nongovernmental organization and Belgian diplomacy.

In 2020, 'Visions of African Unity', a volume edited together with Matteo Grilli was published with Palgrave Macmillan

In 2023, The Ideological Scramble for Africa: How the Pursuit of Anticolonial Modernity Shaped a Postcolonial Order, 1945–1966 was published with Cornell University Press

ONGOING PROJECTS

  • In November 2017 I received funding to set up the Decolonisation Group at the UU Centre for Global Challenges.
  • Project: Between January 2020 and 2021 I am researching the African perception of the European integration process as a co-investigator of the AHRC Project “Regionalism in East Africa c. 1900 to the present” with Christopher Vaughan (PI), Alden Young (Co-Investigator) and Mr P J O'Reilly (Researcher)
  • Project: Neoliberalism in the Global South
  • 2nd Book: Belgium
