Mijn belangstelling gaat uit naar twee verwante psycholinguïstische vraagstukken; (1) wat zijn de (neurocognitieve) processen die ten grondslag liggen aan (ongestuurde) taalverwerving? (2) Hoe hangt het verwerven van taalkennis samen met het (leren) gebruiken van deze kennis, d.w.z. verwerking / begrip en productie. Het is mijn ogen vanzelfsprekend om stoornissen in de taalverwerving, taalproductie of taalverwerking te zien als een natuurlijk laboratorium, waar (delen van) antwoorden op de genoemde vragen gevonden kunnen worden. Tegelijk kan hiermee een beter begrip ontstaan van de mechanismen die aan taalpathologieën ten grondslag liggen. Hierdoor kan een bijdrage worden geleverd aan innovatie of rationalisering van bijvoorbeeld klinisch-linguïstische of logopedische diagnostiek, met betrekking tot o.m. dyslexie, specifieke taalontwikkelingsstoornis (S-TOS) en stotteren.

Algemene projectbeschrijving

The current project will use machine learning techniques to explore if data on speech processing in infancy can predict the occurrence of later literacy difficulties in individual children. We perform a proof of principle study on existing vocabulary and speech discrimination data from infants at risk of DD and low-risk controls.
