During his bachelor study Biochemistry (1999-2004) Frank van Steenbeek did his internship at the department Animal Breeding en Genetics in Wageningen. During these 9 months he has been sequencing a chicken BAC library and focused on visualizing these data using bioinformatics.

After graduating he started as research technician in the department of Clinical Sciences of Companion Animals, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Utrecht, The Netherlands in march 2005. In January 2008 he started his PhD-track titled “the genetic background of congenital portosystemic shunts in dogs” under supervision of prof. Dr. J. Rothuizen. The data have been successfully publically defended on the 23rd of May 2013.

Currently he is appointed as an associate professorship at the Department of Clinical Sciences and at the department of cardiology of University Medical Center Utrecht. His research questions are focused on translational cardiovascular genomics.
