After graduating Theatre, Film and Televisionscience at Utrecht University, Femke den Boer started her career (1996) in the turbulent and highly innovative years in ICT and interactive media. At Cap Gemini she developed several online corporate communication/marketing programs and taking the market’s first steps in e- learning and e-commerce concepts. In the beginning of the Millennium she took her knowledge of online interactivity and usability to the media sector and for 7 years she managed the digital/online media department of one of Netherlands’ largest broadcasters; KRO. In 2008 she left the media sector and was appointed Director Marketing and Communication at VU University in Amsterdam. At the VU University she was in charges of (online) student recruitment, PR/PA, corporate communications, relation management and brand identity. In 2012 Femke got the opportunity to be appointed as Dean/Director of AKV|St.Joost; Academy of Fine Art and Design with a 200 year old history. The Academy of Fine Art and Design, is part of Avans University and offers undergraduate (BA) and graduate (MA) courses and a interational orientated Research Centre in Fine Art and Design.
In September 2019 Femke has been appointed as the Director of The Centre for Science and Culture at Utrecht University. The Centre reflects the challenging environment which Utrecht University offers to the general public, academic researchers and students in all different areas of science and cultural education, engagement and debate. In this role she is the programme leader of the track 'Public Engagement' as a part of the University's Open Science Programme. Utrecht University wants to promote Open Science as part of its promise to make science more open and even more reliable, efficient and relevant to society. The programme aims to stimulate and facilitate researchers to put open science into practice.
Femke is a member of several Supervisory Boards; NPO; The Nederlandse Publieke Omroep (NPO) is a Dutch public broadcasting organization that administers the national public broadcasting budget and provides programming and distribution services for all public broadcasters in the Netherlands. Bibliotheek Utrecht; The Utrecht library with extensive collection spread over 13 locations in Utrecht. From July 2023 she chairs the Supervisory Board of CIBAP; Vocational College for the Creative Arts is a secondary vocational education (MBO) college in Zwolle, the Netherlands offering creative courses for 1800 students. Our aim is to help young people develop at the very highest level in creative, entrepreneurial and technical fields in design, film and divers creative craftsmanship fields.
