Erie Tanja (1981) is a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Law at the Faculty of Law, Economics and Governance.

She is working on a multidisciplinary project 'Responsive governance and forms of government' that is part of the broader research program 'Resilient Societies', financed by the LEG-faculty. The project examines the effects of responsive governance. The underlying questions concern the relationship between the amount of (institutional) responsiveness and support (of citizens) for the rule of law. How does a chosen governance potentially creates responsiveness? What are the merits and the consequences of this responsiveness, mainly from a rule of law perspective? The focus is on local and regional government. At least two casestudies will be carried out, on the functioning of regional economic governance in the Netherlands and on the organization of neighbourhood teams in Dutch municipalities.

In the past years Erie Tanja has worked as an senior advisor at the Raad voor het openbaar bestuur (advisory council to government and parliament), mainly working on the topics of local democracy and regional governance. Before she worked at the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations, mainly on public administration (central, local and regional government, waterschappen), (local) democracy, electoral law and elections.

In 2011 she succesfully defended her PhD at the Radboud University Nijmegen, entitled 'Goede politiek. De parlementaire cultuur van de Tweede Kamer 1866-1940'. The research centred on constructing the view of Dutch MPs on 'good politics', in short the 'correct' way to behave in parliament. This was done by looking at the developments in and of parliamentary rules (written and unwritten) and in the 'self-image' of MPs (mainly regarding their representative role), in context with different political and societal developments between 1866-1940, such as the rise of political parties and the expansion of state business.
