The salinisation of Dutch coastal peat meadows is an environmental challenge driven by sea-level rise, reduced freshwater input, and human-induced subsidence. Elevated salt concentrations affect plant growth and alter soil microbial processes, but the long- and short-term effects of salinisation on decomposition rates are not well understood. Exploring these effects is important for predicting peatland responses to salinisation, guiding sustainable management, and preserving both the ecological functions and carbon storage capacity of these valuable ecosystems. In the NOBV subproject, these effects will be further investigated to improve understanding of how salinity impacts peat meadow ecosystems and their carbon dynamics.
