Dr. Dora Martins Sampaio

Dora Sampaio is Assistant Professor in the Department of Human Geography and Spatial Planning, Utrecht University. Her research and teaching focus on transnational mobilities, inequalities, ageing, transnational families, care and the life course. She has conducted research in Brazil, Portugal, the UK and the United States. Findings from her work have appeared in journals such as Area, Social & Cultural Geography, Population, Space and Place, Ageing & Society, and Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies

She is author of Migration, Diversity and Inequality in Later Life: Ageing at a Crossroads (Palgrave Macmillan, 2022), an ethnography of migrants ageing in the Portuguese islands of the Azores. She received a PhD in Human Geography from the University of Sussex, and her PhD research was shortlisted for the IMISCOE Maria Ioannis Baganha Dissertation Award. She is part of the Editorial Board of the journal Global Networks

Prior to joining Utrecht University, she was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity, Göttingen, taught at the University of Sussex, and was a research fellow at the Centre for Geographical Studies of the University of Lisbon. 

Her research focuses on three main thematic lines: 1) mobilities, life course, diversity and inequality; 2) migration regimes, intergenerational relationships and the global challenge of care; and 3) ageing, mobilities, and trajectories of displacement. 

She would be interested in supervising PhD students with interests in the areas above.
