Bruce Mutsvairo is journalist‑turned‑scholar whose career spans five continents. After studying Russian language and culture at Voronezh University in Russia, he trained as a journalist at Southern Institute of Technology in New Zealand before earning a liberal arts and science degree at Utrecht University in 2004.  He then completed a Master’s in International Journalism at Cardiff University and went on to work as a journalist for the Associated Press in Amsterdam for nearly five years, reporting from several nations including Angola, Ghana and South Africa on AP foreign assignments. He then transitioned into academia and received his PhD at Leiden University's Graduate School of Humanities in 2013. Thereafter, he held teaching, research and leadership positions in the UK, Australia, and the United States. In 2021, he returned to the Netherlands, where he was appointed Professor and Chair in Media, Politics & the Global South at Utrecht University. His research examines how journalists navigate disinformation and “fake news” in conflict and low-income countries, and how sustainable journalism strengthens civic participation in global settings. Professor Mutsvairo, who was selected as the first UNESCO Chair to focus exclusively on data and disinformation research, was named Interim Dean at Amsterdam University College in 2025, agreeing to lead (on secondment from the UU) the strategic operations of an institution, where his academic career began.
