Bruce Mutsvairo currently serves as Full Professor in the Department of Media and Culture at Utrecht University, where he is also Chair of Media, Politics and the Global South. A former journalist with the Associated Press, he brings a combination of professional and scholarly credentials to his research and teaching. He has published over 20 books and special edited issues focusing on a wide range of themes including the development of journalism in post-conflict countries, safety of journalists, citizen journalism, data journalism and fake news, contributing major reference works on the global information disorder as well as challenges facing media practitioners in conflict and post-conflict countries.
He serves on the editorial board of several leading peer-reviewed journals in his field, including Information, Communication and Society, Journalism and Mass Communication Quarterly, Journalism and Mass Communication Educator, Media and Communication, Digital Journalism (2020-2025). He returned to Utrecht in 2021 after nearly eight years working at leading universities in the UK, US and Australia, holding a combination of academic and leadership roles. Bruce holds degrees from Utrecht University, Cardiff University, University of Hull, VU University of Amsterdam and Leiden University, where he completed his PhD in 2013.
