Barbara Oomen holds a chair in the Sociology of Human Rights at Utrecht University. She works at University College Roosevelt, UU's Liberal Arts and Sciences College in Middelburg, where she was the Dean from 2012-2016. Her research the interplay between law and society, with a special emphasis on human rights and cultural diversity. Recent books are Global Urban Justice: the rise of human rights cities (2016) and Rights for others: the slow home-coming of human rights in the Netherlands (2014, both Cambridge University Press). She participates in research networks like the Belspo research on Human Rights Integration.

At UCR, Barbara Oomen teaches the Introduction to Law, Society and Justice and the Introduction to Human Rights. She is a former member of the Advisory Board of the Netherlands Human Rights Institute, the Constitutional Review Commission and the Commission on Human Rights of the Netherlands Advisory Council on Human Rights. She also sits on the editorial board of the Journal of Legal Pluralism, the Netherlands Helsinki Committee and the jury of the Max vd Stoel award.

In 2016-2017, Barbara Oomen is a senior Fernand Braudel fellow at the European University Institute in Florence.

Barbara Oomen is hoogleraar Sociologie van de Mensenrechten aan de Universiteit Utrecht, verbonden aan het University College Roosevelt. Van 2012-2016 was zij Dean van dit College. Zij doet onderzoek naar de verhouding tussen recht en maatschappij, met een speciale belangstelling voor mensenrechten, mensenrechtensteden en rechtspluralisme. Zij is projectleider van het NWO Vici project 'Cities of Refuge', een onderzoek naar steden en de rol van mensenrechten in het opvangen en integreren van vluchtelingen. Haar meest recente boeken zijn 'Rights for Others: the slow-homecoming of human rights in the Netherlands' (2014) en 'Global Urban Justice: the rise of human rights cities' (2016), beiden met Cambridge University Press. Barbara Oomen is ook actief op onderwijsgebied, als docente en expert op het gebied van mensenrechteneducatie, undergraduate research en onderwijsexcellentie. Zij bekleedt een veelheid aan maatschappelijke functies op het gebied van mensenrechten en onderwijsverbetering. In het verleden zat zij in de adviesraad van het College voor de Rechten van de Mens, de Staatscommissie Grondwet, de commissie mensenrechten van de Adviesraad Internationale Vraagstukken en de wetenschapscommissie van de UNESCO. In het academisch jaar 2016-2017 was Barbara Oomen senior Fernand Braudel fellow aan het European University Institute in Florence.
