Dr. Alessandra Spadaro works as an Assistant Professor of Public International Law and is affiliated to the Montaigne Centre for Rule of Law and Administration of Justice. Her expertise lies at the intersection of international humanitarian law, international human rights law, and international criminal law. Her research has appeared in English and French in leading journals, edited volumes, and widely-read international law blogs.
Alessandra is the recipient of a Dutch Research Council (NWO) Veni grant (313.000 €). Starting January 2025, she will be working on a three-year project titled “Business in and for war: the role and limits of international humanitarian law”.
Alessandra obtained her Ph.D. in international law from the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in 2021, with a thesis on detention by armed groups and the highest distinction. At the Graduate Institute, Alessandra was affiliated to a research project on autonomous weapons and war crimes. During her doctoral studies, Alessandra also worked as a teaching assistant at the Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights and as a research assistant at the University of Geneva. In 2019, she completed a semester-long research stay at Harvard Law School.
Alessandra holds a law degree from Bocconi University. She previously worked at the International Labour Organization and for a defence team at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia.
