Prof. Dr. Anna Gerbrandy is professor of Competition Law at Utrecht University School of Law. After graduating with distinction (1995), Anna worked at one of the leading law firms of the Netherlands, and as senior law clerk for the competition law chamber of the district court of Rotterdam, before returning to Academia. In 2009 Anna defended her cum laude-dissertation on “Convergence in Competition Law”. She is full professor of Competition Law since 2013.
Anna’s institutional responsibilities cover both research and education leadership roles. She was Director of Masters’ Programs and subsequently Research Director of Utrecht University School of Law, and member of the board of the School of Law between 2018-2022. Currently, she is co-leader, with Dr. Rutger Claassen, of the University’s Strategic Research Theme Institutions for Open Societies. Anna was PI (until summer 2025) of her ERC-founded research group on Modern Bigness. Anna holds several other positions of trust, both within the University and in societal organizations: she was honorary judge at the High Court of Tariffs and Trade for appellate competition law cases until 1 June 2020 and subsequently non-governmental advisor to the ACM. She is also a Crown Member of the Social and Economic Council of the Netherlands and member of its Daily Board.
Anna holds both the qualifications for education (BKO, Basic Qualification of Education and SKO, Senior Qualification of Education) and for Research (SKO, Senior Qualification for Research).
