Study Programme

Below you will find the courses of the Master's programme Law and Technololgy in Europe.

  • A compulsory part worth 45 EC that comprises four compulsory major courses (7.5 EC each) and Capita Selecta (15 EC).
  • A Research and Thesis Trajectory (15 EC).

Capita Selecta (15 EC):

The Capita Selecta comprises six short modules (each 2.5 EC) designed to help you master a specific topical issue quickly, a vital characteristic of a good lawyer! One module (2.5 EC) of the Capita Selecta is part of the Research and Thesis Trajectory. The Capita Selecta modules we offer vary from year to year. A selection will be made once the programme is running, so stay in touch with the latest developments.

Research and Thesis Trajectory (15 EC):

Programme participants also complete a research thesis. Work on the research thesis runs throughout the Master’s programme, beginning in September and ending late June. You will concentrate on the thesis in the second semester, making use of different interactive teaching methods in conjunction with an individual trajectory together with your supervisor.

Legal Skills Academy

The School of Law takes skills-teaching seriously, integrating professional, legal practice and academic skills into all our Masters’ curricula. Its new Legal Skills Academy puts skills-teaching in the spotlight, so that by the time you finish your Masters you have not only become proficient in the complexities of Law and Technology, but you also have the confidence and skills needed to perform as a professional in legal practice. Your participation in inter alia moot courts, blog-writing and simulated negotiations will give you valuable experience in applied lawyering that will help your CV stand out in a competitive job market.

Internships

The programme provides students with significant flexibility to complete practical placements. For example, undertaking an internship may entitle you to an extended enrolment in the LLM. Internships are also facilitated by UU’s extensive network of professionals in a multitude of public and private organisations at a national and international level.

Extra opportunities

Utrecht University offers several honours programmes for students looking for an extra challenge. Honours education is followed on top of your regular Master's programme and goes beyond the regular curriculum.
