Entry requirements

Are you applying at Utrecht University as an international student? Find out more about application and visa, in relation to the coronavirus developments.

This is a selective Master's programme. You will be considered for admission to the postgraduate programme Epidemiology if you hold a Master's degree, and can demonstrate:

  • A relevant Master’s degree: 
    Master’s programmes that most likely meet the requirements are:
    • Master's in Life Sciences
    • Physicians (MD)
    • Veterinarians (DVM)
    • Pharmacists (PharmD)
    • Other relevant science degree
       
  • Relevant knowledge, insight and skills*
     
  • Academic performance*:
    • Overall score (GPA, average grade, grading tables)
       
  • Academic competences*:
    • High level of academic and professional skills.
       
  • Personal competences*:
    • A clear motivation in participation in the programme.​
       
  • Oral and written proficiency in English at an advanced level (view below).

*If you fail to meet some of the requirements, please indicate why you feel you are still eligible for admission in your motivation letter

Selection procedure

The Admissions Committee reviews all requests for admission and selects students that meet the entry requirements. The Admissions Committee also assesses whether you will be able to successfully complete the Master’s programme within the set time frame. This means the decision on your application is based on a thorough analysis.

You will receive a written notification of the decision of the Admissions Committee. You will also be notified when you are placed on waiting list and/or if you still have to fulfil certain conditions.

English language requirements

  • IELTS, Academic Module. Minimum score: 6.5 overall band, at least 6 for writing.
  • TOEFL, iBT. Minimum score: 93. Institutional scores are not accepted. The TOEFL institution code for Utrecht University is 9062.
  • Cambridge Certificate (not available to students from China):
    • ​Cambridge English C1 Advanced (CAE). Minimum score: 176 total, 169 writing
    • Cambridge English C2 Proficiency (CPE). Minimum score: 180 total, 169 writing

When to apply

Please note that we offer two ways to follow the Epidemiology postgraduate programme: online and face-to-face. The online programme is a part-time Master's programme, covering the same study load as the face-to-face programme, but in approximately 14 hours a week, resulting in a longer duration of the total programme. The face-to-face programme has a limited amount of students that can enroll.

For admission in September (deadline July 1*)

We will begin accepting applications on October 1 (both postgraduate face-to-face and online programme). We recommend that you apply as early as possible, as places in the face-to-face programme are limited. The absolute latest date by which we can receive and process your application for the face-to-face and the online programme is July 1*.

Please note that the online programme is a part-time Master's programme, covering the same study load as the face-to-face programme, but in approximately 14 hours a week, resulting in a longer duration of the total programme. When registering for this online programme in Osiris, please choose 'part-time'. For the face-to-face variant, please choose 'full-time'.

*If you need to apply for a visa, you should submit your application before April 1. This is only relevant if you want to apply for the face-to-face programme.

For admission in February (deadline December 1)

We will begin accepting applications on July 1 (during this period, we only consider applications for the postgraduate online programme). We recommend that you apply as early as possible. The absolute latest date by which we can receive and process your application is December 1.
Please note that this online programme is a part-time master's programme, so please choose 'part-time' while registering in Osiris and Studielink.

Complete your application in time!

In addition to applying online, you are asked to send in a number of forms and documents. Please send everything well before the latest date of application. If your file is incomplete and/or your application fee has not been paid at that time, we will be unable to consider your application.

When can you expect a decision?

The Graduate School strives to inform you of their decision within four to six weeks after receiving your application documents and fee.

Application procedure

The following steps will help you submit a complete application for this programme:

  1. Check the entry requirements for this Master’s programme.
  2. Apply in a timely manner, preferably well before the deadline; see ‘When to apply’.
  3. Download the Instructions for applying to a Master’s programme.
  4. Go to Studielink and complete the online application.
  5. You will receive an email with login details for OSIRIS Online Application, where you can upload the required documents and pay the application fee (if applicable). In OSIRIS Online Application you can also check the status of your application.
  6. For applicants from China only: apply for a Nuffic Certificate.

If you are conditionally accepted, you will be asked to send certified hard copies of your diploma and transcript to International Student Admissions by post.
