Apply for research access
Utrecht University Botanic Gardens facilitates research by staff and students. Research can take place in the garden itself and in the greenhouse complex, where specific research greenhouses are available. You can apply for access by using the form at the bottom of this page. Please first read the various possibilities, conditions and guidelines.
Time slots
For students and employees who need to be in the Gardens for work or research we assign time slots:
- weekdays from 7:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.
- weekdays and weekends from 7:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m
Anyone working outside the normal opening hours of the Gardens (10 am - 4.30 pm) is requested not to remain in the Gardens longer than necessary and to walk directly to and from the entrance or exit. In addition, the guideline on working alone within UU applies.
Access to the outdoor Gardens
In the registration form you can indicate whether you want access to the outdoor Gardens or the Greenhouses. If you work for Bioclive, for example, access to the outdoor Gardens are sufficient. If you want access to the outside Gardens, please indicate whether access through the main entrance is sufficient or whether access through Harvard Avenue (service entrance) is necessary. When you click on the option 'Gardens outside' a sub-menu will unfold in which you can indicate this.
Access to the Greenhouses
For students and staff doing their own research in the Greenhouses, there are several options.
- Access needed to the general area.
- Access needed to the PMI zone.
- Access needed to both zones.
When you click on the option 'Greenhouses', a sub-menu with these three options unfolds. NB. Anyone working in or near the Greenhouses must enter via the service entrance on Harvardlaan.
Introduction and authorisation gate
After submitting the research request, hortulanus Gerard van Buiten will contact the researcher(s) for an introductory meeting. After this meeting, access will be given to open the sliding gate at the Harvardlaan. This can be done with your own campus card.
Start and Completion of the research
After the introductory meeting and agreement to facilitate, the research can be scheduled. The start and end dates are important to take into account in order to efficiently plan the research that we facilitate. Upon completion, it is expected that the location where the research took place will be delivered in the same condition as at the start. Any damage to technology, furnishings or infrastructure must be reported and any costs for replacement or repair will be recovered from the user.
Explore research possibilities
Would you like to explore the research possibilities in the Botanic Gardens first? That is also possible by using the application form. When you click on the option 'I want to explore the research possibilities first', a text field will appear in which you can indicate what kind of research you want to do and what you need for that.
